One Night Stand

Toronto – May 1st, 2001 - Toronto photographer Rannie Turingan’s exhibit one night stand-hung today, gone tomorrow travels from venue to venue in the month of May and into the summer. As its name implies, one night stand was intended to be just that – however, as good evenings often turn into better evenings, this collaborate effort has decided to embark on a long-term relationship.

Debuting at “The Red Spot” in Toronto on April 28, 2001, one night stand is the creative collaboration of music and photography. Rannie’s diverse black and white images encompass performance photos of independent musicians in and around the Toronto area along with unconventional “raw urban” photos taken with a holga toy camera.

Working with a number of talented musicians over the past few years such as Emm Gryner, Danny Michel, Erin Smith Band and Martina Sorbara, Rannie’s one night stand gives him the opportunity to demonstrate his respect for the artists through candid imagery. These photographs exemplify Rannie’s connection with the artists and more specifically, the music they create.

Rannie’s photographic approach is not only influenced by his interest in Toronto’s vibrant independent music scene but also by his vision of a “blurred view of urban life” caught by toy cameras. Just as independent musicians create music regardless of the presence of large record company deals, Rannie proves that capturing intriguing images does not always require thousands of dollars of photographic equipment. Consequently, intriguing images are caught with low-fi cameras just as effectively as great music is delivered through dynamic performances of low-fi musicians.

one night stand exemplifies diversity in all of its content - Rannie’s stylistic cityscapes shot with a toy camera as well as capturing images of the artists in performance show why this exhibit has evolved into a long-term relationship.

one night stand is therefore a great opportunity to ingest great music, support a portion of Ontario’s independent music scene and view fantastic images.
